Bali Food Places | Reviews 🇬🇧

This post is in english. 🇬🇧 Bali food places – a lot to discover, a lot to write about. Check out my personal reviews about all the Bali Food Places such as restaurants, bars and cafes  that I’ve tested in my new home Bali so far.

First of all, I really have to say that Bali is like absolute food heaven to me – especially after spending months on tiny islands in Thailand and Malaysia where the food choice is quite limited.

In Bali its different. On every corner you find fresh raw foods, greens, fruit, veggies, superfoods, organic places and whatever else you could possibly wish for. And the best of all is: the low price!

Bali is definitely the place for foodies and even if you have any kind of allergies or strictly pursue a certain kind of diet such as vegan, gluten free  or lean/high protein, you will always find the right food for you on Bali without being forced to downgrade your standards due to quality and taste.

As Bali is kind of a big island and cafes are literally everywhere, it will take me a little while to test myself through the menus, but I will constantly update this blogpost in order to keep you guys up to date.

I will organize the reviews due to date and location, not by ranking. Only if something is really extraordinary I will put it on top of anything else in that category.

Since I moved to Bali, my food habits turned pretty much into a plant based diet but every now and then I still eat animal products, especially when I’m eating out. No meat though. But I will put a focus on the availability of vegan / vegetarian food in my reviews, too.

Prices at Bali Food Places

I’ve spend the past months in the Canggu area of Bali, which is really boho chic and westernized – Balifornia. You find tons of healthy food places here as well as different cuisines and fusions. Of course there are also tons of local places, so called Warungs, where you can get local food for a really modest price.

The price range of the average places depend on location, quality of the place in general and on what kind of food you are looking for, but for what I have experienced, you pretty much get what you pay for here in Bali.

If you chose one of the „more fancy“ places, you will end up paying more than in average places or warungs, but what you actually pay is still less than what you would pay for it in Europe…and especially less than american / australian standards.

NOTICE:

Some Bali Food places already include 10% tax and 5% service charge, others add it to the bill – that can make a big difference in the end.

Here’s a quick overview of the average price ranges of Bali Food Places.

  • cheap local Bali food places (street food or warungs like Oemge / Just warung) start from 10k IDR (1 AUD, 0,60€) for a meal or fresh  juice and usually go up to max 60-70k for a nice dish including grilled meat or fish
  • cheap westernized Bali food places (like Hungry Bird, Fat Chicken, Mongo’S) are in the price range of 20-75k IDR (1,50-5€) per meal
  • nice westernized Bali food places (like Betelnut, Shady Shack , Bark, Old Mans, Nude Canggu, Green Garden, Cate, Monsieur Spoon, Montago, Cloud 9) are in the price range from 50k-100k (3,50-7,50€) a meal
  • fancy-ish / organic westernized Bali food places (Quince, Organic Cafe, Poke Poke, C’ugh House, Maitai, La Baracca, In the RAW) start from around 60k up to around 200k (4-15€) , depending on what kind of food (sashimi = expensive) you’re getting

Of course there are also high class restaurants but I haven’t been to any of them yet – if anyone wants to collaborate, just let me know ! Just contact me on Instagram. 😉

Reviews of Bali Food Places

For me, there is a few criteria that makes a good bar / restaurant but the key ingredient – just as in any other business – is a high quality product combined with extraordinary service.

In order to keep my reviews objective, I will try to stick to a kind of structure, including criteria that I consider to be important, such as:

  • location
  • prices
  • quality of the food
  • taste of food
  • variety of menu
  • serving size
  • staff
  • service quality
  • atmosphere
  • interior design
  • comfort
  • detail
  • wifi
  • sanitary facilities
  • general impression

Disclaimer:

I work as a professional food photographer and freelance hospitality business consultant.

The list above is a part of my checklist when I’m booked to do a detailed feedback targeting on improving and growing someones business.

Of course I won’t be able to pay so much attention to every single detail in the little reviews in the blogpost , especially when I’m just going to a place for a quick breakfast and not for work.

And of course, only one meal isn’t 100% representative for the whole food place, but I will try to cover the key points as good as possible.

Reviews, that are very detailed, are usually resulting of my consulting work (= the restaurant pays for the publishing of my work on one of my websites) . This doesn’t mean that those places pay for the content itself , the ones that have to improve just don’t want the detailed feedback to be published.

For Owners of Bali Food Places

Do you run a place and have been reviewed by me on here / instagram or tripadvisor and are not happy about the result and would like to know how to perform better in future ? Contact me for a second chance and…

Reviews of Bali Food Places

Like I said, I’ve been mostly in Canggu lately, so lets start out with this part of lovely Bali.

I’ll just order them due to price category to make your choice a bit easier. 🙂

Btw, I’ve been to tons of places but not able yet to review them all in this post. But at least I already put their names up. So stay tuned for more ! 🙂

low budget Bali food places

(street food or warungs like Oemge / Just warung) start from 10k IDR (1 AUD, 0,60€) for a meal or fresh  juice and usually go up to max 60-70k for a nice dish including grilled meat or fish

  • Oemge

Omega is a small and open local place located directly on the main road, around 5-7 mins scooter ride from Berawa beach. The food choice is limited to local dishes as far as I can remember. The food quality / taste is good, the prices are really cheap and the people there are very nice. The portions could be bigger though – but that is kind of a standard issue in Asia 😉 . Its a really good vibe there, very personal and „family like“, but in general Oemge is very simple and casual, so if you’re looking for fine dining you should skip this place. If you want cool people, cheap but tasty food and genuine local atmosphere, come over! 🙂

  • Tenpoh

Tenpoh is a small cafe on Raya Canggu, one of the big streets connecting the parallel beaches in Canggu.

Its not really a „place to be“ in terms of hanging out or working as there are many local families with children so it can get kind of busy and noisy, but its an amazing cheap option for grabbing some food on the way home or getting it delivered. The menu is a mixture of western and local food – and they have banana nutella pizza. 😀

My favorite are the chia glasses – but I think they can’t make them with plant milk so if youre looking for vegan options, Tenpoh is probably not your place.

cheap westernized Bali food places

price range of 20-60k IDR (1,50-4€)

  • Hungry Bird

Hungry Bird is a westernized cafe located on the road to Berawa beach, right next to the shortcut to Batu Bolong. Its quite popular because of its affordable and tasty food and therefore pretty busy most of the times, especially after the morning surf.

You can sit indoor and outdoor, the indoor area is air conditioned and they have EPIC free wifi – I was able to upload youtube videos. They also have plug stations everywhere so its really a good place to work and enjoy some drinks without spending tons of money.

The food choice is quite diverse, though mostly westernized (all kinds of eggs, different burgers, salads, pancakes). I think they also had some

  • Fat Chicken
  • Mongo’s
  • Zoeys

nice westernized Bali food places

price range from 55k-100k (3,50-7,50€) a meal

  • Crate Cafe

I had breakfast at @cratecafe two days in a row and I reeeeaaally love this place. It’s located in the batu bolong area in Canggu, close to the beach, very central. They have an amazing choice of food with lots of vegan / vegetarian options and amazing fruit bowls / shakes for a decent price : everything is around 50k IDR (around 3€) . 😍 the design is super cool, everything is held simple and minimalistic but really stylish. The staff is very nice and the taste of the food (especially that chia thing I had) is really good. I also like the food presentation = the way they decorate the dishes . They could work on the service quality though, as I had to wait for ages for my food yesterday and remind them 2 times. But today everything was alright, they served quick and everyone I asked confirmed that this is usually the case – maybe I was just a bit unlucky yesterday. 😇 the vibe is cool and it’s nice to sit in the upstairs area. Downstairs is not my favorite cause it’s usually super busy and located directly on the busy street to the beach but that’s a common issue with many of the lovely cafes located in this area – just plug in your headphones and you can escape the noise. Workwise I don’t really know if it’s a good spot, as the wifi didn’t work with my iPhone today. But it’s still one of my favorite places and I’ll be back for sure !❤️ decent food – awesome price : thumbs up for #cratecafe !

  • Monsieur Spoon

Monsieur Spoon is – just like Crate – also located in the batu bolong area in Canggu, close to the beach, very central. They have an nice choice of food with lots of vegan / vegetarian options and amazing fruit bowls / shakes for a decent price : everything is around 50k IDR (around 3€) . 😍 So its quite close to crate, thats why I just copied the text haha.

But Monsieur Spoon is also a french bakery and has amazing bread choices as well as pastries and cakes , I tried some vanilla puff pastry thing : it was soooo good ! reminded me of my beloved Krempita from Croatia.

Another thing that I really love about Monsieur Spoon is the lovely garden where you can sit in a chilled atmosphere and enjoy your food / drinks. Its also a very nice place to work if its not too hot outside.

I really like that place and will be back for sure. 🙂

  • Betelnut Cafe

Betelnut is als  located in the batu bolong area in Canggu, close to the beach, very central., pretty much in the middle between Crate and Monsieur Spoon. And just as the other two Cafes, they have a good choice of food and also vegan / vegetarian options and amazing fruit bowls / shakes, it is a tiny bit more pricey than Crate and Monsieur Spoon, but still around for a decent price : everything is around 60k IDR (around 4€) per meal  .

Betelnut is always super busy and everyone loves it. I liked it, too but I have to admit that I think its hyped. The food was alright, yeah, but there are tons of cafes that are better. And I really didn’t like the cheesecake which was overpriced and the worst tasting that I’ve ever had. Might try it again one day but for now, I’m not their biggest fan – sorry Betelnut !

  • Shady Shack
  • Old Mans
  • Nude Canggu

Nude Cafe is located in the Berala area of Canggu and literally one of my favorite places so far.

  • Green Garden
  • Cloud 9

See my picture here.

I’ve been to cloud 9 for a couple of times now but I have to say that I’m not really a big fan which is pretty sad because the location is amazing: you sit on bean bags in a lovely garden with the view on a rice field. The variety on the menu is nice and they also have super healthy, vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Unfortunately the staff is a little bit slow (friendly though) , the quality of the ingredients as well as the taste and presentation of the food aren’t extraordinary , portion sizes are quite small. Therefore I think its overpriced, as they also add taxes and service charge to the bill. If you wanna have a nice chat over a drink you can go there cause its really nice to sit but I personally won’t go there for food again.

  • Mongo’s
  • Old Mans
  • Machinery Cafe

After yoga food – went to an amazing fire class (kundalini) at @thepracticebaliyoga at 7am , @jyoti_murray did such an incredible job 😍😍🙏🏼❤️ Then I tested this super amazing place @machinerycafebali and I’m sooooo in love !!❤️❤️❤️ after being a food & travel blogger for a while I’ve seen and tested tons of places within the past years so I’m really particular and picky about food, atmosphere and whatever it takes to build / run a successful business in hospitality. I’ve been everywhere, from high end restaurants to tiny local street kitchens and i have to admit that after all my experience in reviewing and consulting hospitality, I’m seriously impressed by #machinerycafebali ,which is a small cafe in the Badung area of Canggu/ Bali . It’s incredible how much love they put in the detail , the interior design is super cool , the menu is super various but not overloaded , the arrangement/presentation of the dishes are super nice , the food quality and taste are extraordinary as well as the service by the lovely staff. “ The only way to do great work is to love what you do “ is one of my favorite quotes of steve jobs cause it applies to everything in life and this is exactly what happens here. BIG big shoutout for this cute little cafe , I’ll be back for sure ! ❤️

  • Deus ex machina

  • Satu Satu

See my picture here.

The hunt for the best #balifoodplaces goes on …and there is SO much to discover ! 😍❤️ just tried out @satusatucoffeecompany yesterday morning as it’s number 1 on tripadvisor and even though it’s good , I found a lot places that i personally liked better. I think it’s a little bit above average when it comes to food quality / taste but in relation to the prices not really extraordinary so I don’t really get the hype, to be honest. There’s nothing wrong with that place for sure and the staff is super super friendly, too but I personally wouldn’t rate it my number 1 as it’s more kind of average in general (also the arrangement / presentation of the food) and the servings aren’t that big either. The variety of the menu is average, too. I would have loved to be more enthusiastic about it but I always do honest reviews so I’m very very sorry that I couldn’t rate you any better than a bit above average, dear satu satu ! 🙏🏼🙏🏼✨

  • Montago
  • Mades Banana Flour Bakery

Ubud:

  • Bali Bohemia

I was spending a day in ubud , exploring my beloved island bali. First stop : monkey forest 🐒🌴✨ , second stop : @bali_bohemia , a cute little cafe right at the entrance of the forest . It’s so nice here , everything is super cozy and colorful and the food choice is simply amazing. Western food but also local dishes, lots of vegan and vegetarian options and cheap prices. the food was super fresh and of high quality and I looooved the taste. The staff is lovely and the wifi works: Thumbs up for this place ! 😍

fancy-ish / organic westernized Bali food places

  • Quince

See my picture here.

Found this super amazing place @quince_bali today after being 4 weeks in Canggu and as a food & travel blogger I’ve seen and tested tons of places within the past years so I’m really particular and picky about food, atmosphere and whatever it takes to build / run a successful business in hospitality. I’ve been everywhere, from high end restaurants to tiny local street kitchens and i have to admit that after all my experience in reviewing and consulting hospitality, I’m seriously impressed by #quincebali which is a small cafe in the berawa area of Canggu/ Bali . It’s incredible how much love they put in every detail , the interior design is „pinterestly perfect“ , the menu is super various but not overloaded , the arrangement/presentation of the dishes are perfect to the detail , the food quality and taste are extraordinary as well as the service by the lovely owners. “ The only way to do great work is to love what you do “ is one of my favorite quotes of steve jobs cause it applies to everything in life and this is exactly what happens here.
